Charged with Possession and Paraphernalia, First Time Offense
My question involves criminal law for the state of: New Jersey

So, i'm a 19 year old college student and a few days ago my boyfriend and i were caught smoking and were charged with 2C:35-10A(4) and 2C:36-2 (possession of less than 1 gram of marijuana and paraphernalia). Both were categorized as disorderly persons offense. I have no past criminal record and i've never been arrested. I've never even gotten a parking or speeding ticket, so my record is clean aside from this. I think my boyfriend may have a parking ticket on his...

I'm wondering what kind of punishment should i/we be expecting? What's the average fine for these two charges and will we be given separate fines for each? Are we facing jail time or just probation and what does probation usually entail? Should i get/need a lawyer even if i'm pleading guilty? Is it possible to get this expunged from my record at some point? Also, what is a diversion program, or a pretrial intervention? Can requesting this help me in anyway? How do i go about doing this?

Any and all advice is greatly appreciated... thanks.

Are you receiving any type of financial aid or grants?

Well among other things, you can kiss that goodbye...
Per the Federal Student Aid website:
    Quote:

You might not be able to receive federal student aid if you have been convicted of selling or possessing illegal drugs, if the drug offense for which you were convicted occurred while you were receiving federal student aid (grants, loans, and /or work study).
    Congratulations

The sarcasm isn't necessary, but thanks for the heads up on that. I'll see what i can do about the aid situation at a later date, but for now do you have any information about the questions i posted?

Oh, I wasn't being sarcastic at all. I meant everything I said...

but here's sarcasm... you're a college student. Use your research skills and look up the statutes to which you're accused of violating.
