    What are my friends options?
My friend just turned 16. She lives in Georgia with her parents, who abuse her and her 14-year-old sister physically and emotionally, and use drugs. her father has also threatened to kill her mother, and my friend believes he has also raped her mother. Her mother, however, wouldn't leave him because she wouldn't be able to support her family without his income.

My friend doesn't want to go to the police - it's possible only her father would go to jail, and then her mother wouldn't be able to support her and her sister. She's also afraid of having to live with new people, afraid she'll end up in another abusive situation, that she won't have any control over her life, etc, etc.

I suggested she get emancipated, but apparently that's not possible in Georgia. She has a girlfriend in California, they were hoping to move into an apartment together in a couple years (as they can't afford it right now).

If she simply... left... would her parents be able to do anything about it?

Does she have any other options?

That's called "running away from home". Her parents could file a police report, and if/when the police find her they would normally either return her to her home or turn her over to child protective services.

However... if her parents don't file a police report (she could threaten to turn THEM into the police if they don't let her go), she can 'run away' if she wants?

Can she be legally emancipated and move in with her girlfriend due to the abusive situation?
