Employer Gives Out My Partial Social Security Number
This is pertaining to the state of Ar. I recently discovered that when a customers recieves a reciept for work done by me, it has my full name and the last 4 of my social security number. I asked that it be removed and was told that it is company policy to do this. My manager said he would "look into it" but has been a bit slow in getting back to me. I really dont want that info given out to the public and it doesnt seem like it shoud be allowed. Is it legal? Thanks,
Re: Employer Gives Out My Partial Ssn
Probably. More and more states are enacting laws regarding the public (or even internal) release of the FULL SSN on documents that don't specifically require it, such as W-2s. However, even the arguably most employee-friendly state, California, allows the employer to mask the first 5 digits, for example. Besides, how does the client know these 4 digits are part of your SSN? Why couldn't it just be a number unique to you as an employee? It's pretty unlikely that two employees in the same company would have the same last 4 digits.
