    First offense for petty threat
Last week, I was caught shoplifting at target. This was my first time i ever stolen something and i am extremely scared on what is going to happen to me. I was arrested and the police took my fingerprints. I was charged with a misdemeanor on my citation. I didnt know what i was thinking. I am eighteen years old, i go to CSLB in long beach california and i have really good grades. The thing is, im taking summer school during the summer and im short on money to pay for my tuition and my books. That is why i decided to steal, but i didnt know what i was thinking. All i was worried about was to save my money so i can go to school in the summer. Anyway, the amount i stole was about $47.00. I am really scared because im afraid this will affect me in the future. i am majoring in nursing and psychology and im afraid having this on my record will ruin my life. Please help me on what i should do. This is my first time. Should i hire a lawyer? and how much do you think it will be? will this be on my record my entire life? What do you think my consequences will be? i feel so guilty and i know i've learned my lesson to never come close to what i have put myself into. Please advice me on what i should know or should be prepared for. Thank you.

Consider consulting a local criminal defense lawyer, to see if you qualify for any diversion programs or a delayed sentence. If so, you may be able to avoid a criminal conviction.
