Took Off Sensor but Left Merchandise

My question involves criminal law for the state of: California

I have a shopping addiction which I have been getting help for though I relapsed and attempted to shoplift an item. I removed the sensor (damaging the mechandise) though changed my mind and put the item back before leaving the store.

I did purchase something elso though so they have my name, etc. I'm sure that the shop clerks knew what I was up to and even though I left the item. I noticed that several were inspecting the item and after I left a security guard followed me to my car though they never said of did anything.

I have been convicted of theft once before (decades ago). Do you think there will be reprecussions from this. Should I step up and offer to pay for the item I damaged or just wait to see if anything happens.

We have no way of answering this. There COULD be, but we don't know if there WILL be, and are not in the habit of making predictions.

    Stay out of that store.

Thank you for answering, have you ever heard of a situation like this?

We hear of a lot of situations.

We can't predict what will happen, ok? We can give you some scenarios:

    - Your pic may be posted in the LP office, breakroom, employee time clock area of that store - and all of that chains locations within a 3 hour radius. Also possible is the LP's who saw you likely work that store plus others of that chain. Simply put - stay out of that store for a while. Or you may be recognized and apprehended when you go back.

    - I give you kudos for getting counseling for your shoplifting addiction. I'm sure you realize that getting caught is going to be a lot more expensive than any item you try to steal. Maybe you can hire someone to do your shopping for you for a while? $25, here's my grocery list....and that way you are away from temptation for a while....You do realize getting caught means never entering that store...at any location...for a long time, right?

Thank you very much for your scenario's and your advice...you make valid points! It's an awful addiction and the sad thing is that I don't even need the items. I won't be going back there ever and will take your advice about getting someone else to get items I need in the future....Thank you!
