Return Mistake in Washington D.C.
I purchased a purse from a major department store, then found one at the maker's outlet for practically half price. When I went to return the one to the department store, I returned the wrong one (different color). The sales clerk & her manager looked it up in their big book of purses & verified that they do sell it, in this color, even though my receipt showed a different one, so they created a new tag for it, and refunded my money (around $350). This happened in Washington DC. Should I be worried that they could come after me? I didn't intend to do anything wrong, but now after a few weeks, I'm concerned that this was in fact wrong on my part - and having read on this site about civil demands, felonies, etc, etc. - should I be concerned? What could happen? I would gladly call them up & offer to pay for it - to clear my conscience at least, but I'm afraid that that would create more problems than it would solve. Should I be worried for the next two years?
:wallbang:
Any advice would be appreciated.
Re: Return Mistake in Washington D.C.
Strictly speaking, it could be construed as return fraud.
Given that the retailer verified that they do sell it and they created a tag for it, I wouldn't be too concerned.

Thank you for answering - Do you think it would be foolish to contact them & try to explain?
Re: Return Mistake in Washington D.C.
You may want to contact them and correct the transaction, but, intent is elemental in most any shoplifting/return fraud incident.
If what you claim is true then an 'accident' occurred.
You may wanna fix it.......no harm, no foul.
