Shoplifting in Illinois, First Offense
My question involves criminal law for the state of: Illinois
I was caught shoplifting at the Icing in a mall for a pair of earrings worth $6.50. I could have paid them and I told that to the officer. I was very apologetic and cooperative. I was taken to jail and given an NTA. This is my first offense and I am 18 years old. I would like to know what my punishment will most likely be. I am very sorry for what I've done, and I take full responsibility. I have a court date in a few weeks. I've also heard about getting a free attorney at court. What would be in my best interest? Thank you for all of your help.
Re: Shoplifting in Illinois, First Offense
You go to court. Plead Not Guilty. Ask for a public defender.
Be sure to inquire about any Diversion Programs that may be offered.
Punishment: This varies by area, judge, etc. Expect court costs/fine. Possibly probation. And don't forget to pay the Civil Demand from the store when it arrives.
