Confused About Court

This is related to my post on shoplifting at Walmart in NC; bf charged as accessory...
When I go to court, and plead not guilty just so I can ask for a public defender/attorney, will I have to go on the stand? Will it not get me into more trouble for first saying "not guilty" and then telling the defender that I actually am guilty, but I am very sorry and it will definatley not happen again, and I was very coroporative and never tried to lie about it?

Is there any way I can call someone at the court and ask for a public defender BEFORE I go to court? We do not have a public defender's office where I live.

I never said anyone was lying, I just don't understand how that wouldn't get me into more trouble.
