Recieved a Letter from a Collection Agency (No Clue Why)
I received a letter saying I owe chase $700 and that I could settle it for half of that if I send them a check immediately. I have never had a Chase Account. I used to have a WAMU account but it was closed long time ago. It was a checking account so I didn't have a negative balance or anything. The letter didnt state anything else.

Given that Chase acquired Washington Mutual, that may be the explanation.

Get a copy of your credit report (the official, free site is annualcreditreport.com - some of the bureaus may offer to sell you additional products, but you can get your report for free, no strings attached) and you'll probably be able to identify the source of the claim.

So dispute it. It's simple enough.

Write them back, tell them that you've never had such an account, and ask for proof that you owe what they claim you owe. It's up to them to prove that you owe it, not the other way around.

There isn't anything on my credit report. I had the Wamu account over 6 years ago. I closed it because I moved to BOA. My cell phone number has always been the same and my billing address has been the same.
