I need to find out how to get emancipated in Oklahoma. I am 16 and living with my grandmother who is my guardian. Is it possible for me to get an emancipation? Can i move in with my girl friend when she turns eighteen? I am tired of getting verbaly abused and told i am worthless. :wallbang:
To stand any chance at becoming legally emancipated you will need to show that you have been completely self-supporting for a period of time. This means:
Paying for rent, utilities, food, gas etc. without ANY assistance. No room-mates, no girlfriend, nothing. So before we go any further, can you do this?
(and what exactly do you mean by verbal abuse?)
Re: Emancipation in Oklahoma
I am fairly certain i can do this, and i dont really need gas i either bike or walk wherever i go or mabe even take the bus. I can get a job and my school has apartments for emanciated students so that helps. It may not even be under verbal abuse but she makes me feel so angry and worthless that i really cant take it, and i try my hardest to block out what she says when she starts in and that normaly works but i still get angry, but i dont say a word. Also, one other thing; i get a thousand dollars a month in social security checks i think it is, and she has access to that, If i get emancipated will she be cut off from that?

Considering OK grants emancipation very, very rarely, I'm interested to know which college you attend.
Next, I'm sorry but you're not going to like this.
OK is possibly - out of all the states which do allow for emancipation - the LEAST likely state to grant such a petition. When it does happen, it happens when the petitioner has shown a solid history of living alone and being able to support him/herself without ANY assistance. No free rent, no government aid (and this means no SSI/SSDI checks), NOTHING.
Assuming you're receiving social security checks for a reason other than your own disability, these will stop completely if you are successfully emancipated which puts you back in square one. How will you support yourself?
Re: Emancipation in Oklahoma
Sorry, but the only thing an emancipated minor in OK can do that a non-emancipated minor cannot do, is buy real estate.
So no, you cannot be emancipated and you cannot move in with your girlfriend.
NO state will emancipate a minor so that they can move in with their girlfriend/boyfriend. NO state.
NO state will emancipate a minor based on "I'm going to get a job". NO state.
NO state will emancipate a minor because they don't get along with their parents. NO state.
Contrary to what far too many children (and legally that is what you are) believe, emancipation is not and never was intended to be a means for a minor to leave home. It was and is intended to be a means of legal protection for those minors who, through no fault of their own, found themselves living alone.
Re: Emancipation in Oklahoma
Of course.. the one state im in. Im not in college yet but there is a college in Pheonix, Arizona that i have been looking at. Its one of the few colleges i can find with visual and game programming. Its a private arts college that costs only a little more than normal colleges and excepts grade averages as low as 2.5 last i checked. I would support myself by working however many hours I had to at work and attempt to find a low rent appartment, i dont need much space, i dont really care if its only one room or anything like that. Sorry if im not making any sense im kind of stressed.

And how old will you be when you start your college education?
Re: Emancipation in Oklahoma
In case you didn't get it, you wouldn't qualify for emancipation in any state based on your post.
When you are 18, you can go wherever you like and go to whatever college you want to. Of course, you will also get the privilege of paying for every cent of your expenses including college tuition since your parents (pardon me, you said grandmother) will have no further obligation to pay anything (or to provide you with her financial information so that you can get loans) but then, that would also be the case even if you were emancipated.

Um...cosign? :)
(With that said...OK *will* occasionally grant a motion which essentially emancipates the child. It's just a) rare and b) done only in exceptional circumstances - none of which have been noted here)
(and hi, btw! nice to be here with you guys ;) )
Re: Emancipation in Oklahoma
If you graduate from high school and your parents agree to let you go to college in another state, you can go to college in another state. Emancipation's not necessary for that.
