Last Name Change on Docs After Marriage
    Hi,

My fiance (who is a US citizen) and I (working on H1B visa) are going to get married in Feb, and I am planning to file for a Green Card soon after. The last name on my passport, SSN, visa petition is my maiden name and after marriage I will be taking on my husband's last name. Will I be required to get my home country passport, my SSN card and the visa docs updated with my new last name before I submit form I-130, I-485 etc.? And which last name am I supposed to use on these forms?

    Thanks...

when you file your documents with USCIS use the last name that shows on your DL at that time, meaning if you went to the DMV and changed your name and got a new DL or ID card with your new last name than thats the one you should use (there is a place to put down your maiden name on the USCIS papers - its where they ask for other names that you have used)

it will be a good idea to update your new last name with SS, DMV for when USCIS runs the background check on you and updating you passport will save you time and headache in future travel.

ok...so here's the problem... my passport and my ssn and all have my maiden name. Does everyone go through updating their passport, ID and all after they get married and before they file the I-130, I-485 etc?

I am planning to go out of the country in October and with us getting married in Feb, there isn't enough time for me to update all my docs. Can I just use my maiden name for now and then update my name later? which is the lesser of the two evils?
