My question involves criminal law for the state of: Maryland
Yesterday i was caught shoplifting at wegmans. Its the same story as everyone else, LP and police escorted me to a side office and proceeded to check my bags. Idk the amount i stole(prob over $50) I was so scared that i just numbed myself and denied everything cuz since the police were already there I thought he would take me to jail as soon as I admitted guilt. They kepted telling me to confess and evrything would be ok, but i guess i have seen too many cop shows and decided to be stubborn. They took my picture and copied my license. I signed papers banning me front the store and was told to expect to apear in court. I called them today after i woke up (physically and literally) and explained to the LP how sorry I was and the reason I didnt want to admit guilt. Well unsurprisingly he didnt want to hear any of it so he's def taking me to court.
1. Is there diversion programs offered in MD
2. since i didnt admit guilt at the time, should I admit guilt when I go to court
3. I just want to put this behind me asap, i feel horrible, what is he best/quickest way to end this at court?
4. Do i need a lawyer or can i just go myself and talk for myself?
I am a 24 yr old college student with a clean record. I am disgusted w/ my behavior and will never steal again, whats the best thing to do for this to lessen my future plans?
