Supply Company Refuses to Accept My Business
Can a contractor supply company, that is open to the public, legally refuse to do business with you if your credit is good? Is there a law in Florida that would regulate this?

A private business can refuse to do business with anyone they choose not to do business with as long as the reason for their refusal is not in direct violation of specific law.

Such as because of your race, religion, sex, etc....

I've had a number of customers in my own business that I've invited to take their business elsewhere. That's a common business practice when a customer is such a pain in the ass that you simply don't want their business. If doing business with you is not something they consider to be worthwhile why should they do business with you? It has to work for both parties, not just you.

Let's look at this another way.

You own a bar... a guy comes in that tells the same damn joke every night. he always pays his tab and doesn't smell terrible, but always the same joke.

And, worse, it is a knock knock joke.

So, one night after hearing "orangeya glad I didn't say banana" for the millionth time, you have had it. You bar him from the bar (say THAT ten times fast) for ever.

Have you done anything wrong? Nope... in fact, you probably raised the overall IQ of your establishment by several points.

I don't know why your business is not wanted... but I bet you do.

This isn't a personal issue with me. This company is discouraging the small businessmen in favor of the few larger companies that they have ties to. Their sales rep complains when you make a small order. He's asked us to call in advance to make an order - which we do - but then we are subject to whether or not he feels like getting the order ready on any particular day so we can't set specific times to our customers on when their jobs will get done. He is also related to the owner. Believe me, if there was another supplier in our area, this company would lose ALL of the local small business.

So, essentially, he's not outright refusing your business, but rather is making it exceedingly difficult to do business with him?

    Still not illegal.

It sounds like they simply want to sell in larger quantities than you want to buy. Processing costs of small orders make them less profitable than large orders. Giving preference to large customers who buy more is simply good business.

You don't mention your type of business, so I have no idea what kinds of supplies we are talking about. But, for many kinds of items purchasing on-line is a good alternative for the little guy. You might do a web search for the type of supplies that you need and find a firm that can ship to you cheaper than you can buy locally.

There has been a turn of events - since writing here, I also decided to go directly to the owner & discuss the problem with him. I was reluctant to do so since the manager (rep) is related to him & didn't want to make matters worse. I suggested he charge a small fee for a small order if that was the problem - being in business, I could understand that - he said they produce in quantity so that wasn't necessary. Apparently, the problem is a family issue that is going to be resolved. So there's a lesson here, don't assume - go to the top!!!!!
