Shoplifted at Mervyn's
I was caught shoplifting at Mervyn's California last week. The merchandise was about $40. The LP was very nice to me and said he didn't want to embarass me as he lead me to his office. This is the first time I've ever done anything like this. I'm a college student about to graduate and really regret this. He didn't call the police but took my information and took my picture. He was nice the whole time and made small talk. He said he figured I wasn't a "lowlife" so he said Mervyn's will send me something in the mail to pay off and my name will only be in the records. He said I was welcome to come back and shop again but if I shoplifted again (god forbid) I would be prosecuted since it would be a second offense. My question is, will this guy screw me later? or am I really lucky that all I have to do is pay a fee. I have not received mail yet and have been worrying everyday. I do not want this on any records and I believe him because no authorities were contacted. I have been reading about civil demands but he didn't mention that. I didn't sign anything and he just released me wishing me a good day. Please help me out if you have the same situation or know what will end up happening to me. Thanks in advance for you help!

The thing they will send you in the mail is most likely a civil demand, it's your call to pay it or not. I'd be a little wary of returning to shop there, usually shoplifters are given a trespass notice.
