    Being Charged with Disorderly Persons/Theft
My question involves criminal law for the state of: NJ

i'm being charged with a 2c-20-3a theft of moveable property totalling under $200, its a disorderly persons offense. i intend to plead guilty, return the stolen items and provide restitution if necessary. it is my first offense. realistically, what penalties would i be facing?

if fines, are those expected to be paid immediately or can a payment schedule be worked out?

even though i will plead guilty, should i ask for a public defender/attorney?

i'm just very confused because i've never been in a situation like this before. thanks.

From what I can see, a disorderly persons offense carries a penalty of up to six months in jail and/or a fine of up to $1,000.

I suggest talking to a lawyer before you decide how to plead. Ask about whether you might be eligible for a diversion program or deferral.
