Lying About a Criminal Record to Get a Job

I don't advocate dishonesty in most dealings. But I also don't advocate starving to death. I only told her to leave it blank or answer no for a short time. Maybe I was wrong. She should write in the space, Yes, I'll explain in the interview. Maybe that will get her in the door.

P.S. CBG, if you want credability, at least learn to spell the name of the person you are challenging.

You're advocating dishonesty in ANY situation, and you're questioning MY credibility?

Agree with cbg. Don't lie on an employment application. If you do & the employer finds out (which they most certainly might), you will have more problems getting & keeping a job than if you told the truth.

She is correct that many small businesses do background checks. I wouldn't want to take the chance that they will not do one. Also, they can find out other ways about the felonies other than by a background check.

I have to agree with you nite riderusa unlike most here. I say lie! A job for a month or a few weeks is better than none at all and that's all that those of us with felonies on our record can get, none.
I just got fired last week from a factory job after working for a month and a half when my background check came back revealing an assault charge from back in 03. The assault was actually a misdemeanor. The few checks that I got got the gas turned on for the winter and a few other bills caught up. I don't regret lying and you can bet I'll do it again to keep my rent paid, the heat on, and food on the table.

394216 - what reason are you going to give to a prospective employer as to why you were terminated from your last job? Can we assume you'll lie about that too?

Betty, He will probably not put this job down as a reference in the future. I don't condone lying; but I don't condone starving or freezing either. If it comes down to lying about my criminal history, or providing sustanance for my children........... I'll have another sin to ask forgiveness for.

You all have absolutely no idea how easy it is for a lie like that to be exposed. I've had information fall into my lap about current and former employees when I wasn't even looking for it. Not to mention a few other situations - I've told the story before about how, when I was introduced to my new boss, he commented on my surname (my maiden name is somewhat unusual and I was using it at the time) and how he knew someone else with the same name. Turned out he was my father's next door neighbor. Good thing I hadn't lied about anything in my history because he'd have know it instantly - he and my dad had often exchanged stories about their kids.

So, those of you who "don't condone lying" but also advocate it in order to get a job - do you advocate being fired for lying, being ineligible for unemployment on account of it and having to account for a big chunk of time where you either can't or won't admit where you were working because you'd have to say why you were fired?

It is always best to be honest.

Let's face it:

(1) It takes time and money to train a new employee.
(2) That background check can be thorough. When your employer finds out you lied about your criminal history, well....your employer is going to wonder why you did not tell the truth to begin with.
(3) unless you are Union, your employment is "At Will".
(4) A lot of employers want to know about gaps in your employment history. What LIE will you use to explain the time when you worked for X Employer and got canned for lying?

Sometimes people have to think short term,rent needs to be paid,food,etc,like the op said that check for a few weeks or months is some money and could be the difference from being homeless.
