Immigrant with Suspended License for No Insurance
My question involves a driver's license issued by the State of: Tennessee
I am an illegal immigrant living in Tennessee. I was pulled over for speeding and was arrested for driving on a suspended licence for failure to comply with financial responsibilities. I have never been issued a TN drivers licence so I did not even know that my driving privilages had been suspended. I have been pulled over before but was only given a ticket for driving without a licence and no insurance. I have bever been arrested or ever had any other problems with the law (no DUI's, drug posession, nothing)
I am going to court THIS TUESDAYand need to know what to expect. What do I need to do to avoid jail? I have applied for an international drivers licence but will not know if it will be granted to me for atleast 2 more weeks. Should I request to postpone my court date until I know more about this? I can apply for insurance using the number they assigned to me as a "DL Number". Will this help? I cannot afford a lawyer, so my friend will be going with me to translate. What other advise does anyone have to offer?
Re: Immigrant with Suspended License for No Insurance
An "international driver's license" has no legal significance. Getting one won't lift your suspension. Presumably you are suspended due to the prior tickets you received. (Did you blow those off?)
I suggest consulting a lawyer. If you need a translator, inform the court of your need in advance so that they can commission a court-certified translator to assist you.
