Caught Shoplifting at Sears
My question involves criminal law for the state of: NJ
I was recently apprehended for shoplifting $29 worth of merchandise at a Sears--this included a headband and two packs of hosiery. The security guard and a witness took me to a room, made a copy of my license, and had fill me out documents, indicating that I knew I had committed theft (they also "advised" me not to shop in that Sears ever again). I also paid a restitution fee for the goods stolen. Obviously, shoplifting was extremely stupid.
Since I am only 18 years old, the security guard was extremely nice. He did not call the police, and promised to send my civil demand (from the Sears lawyers, for which I will have to pay a fine) to my college address. He said he had daughters my age, and would not want to see someone their age throw her life away. He also assured me that this would not show up on my public record and that the police would not be contacted.
That said, will my name be put into some sort of database? I know two companies, InfoCubic and Corra Group, claim to serve thousands of companies--and include shoplifting reports which would otherwise not showup on a record. Does anyone know if Sears is a customer of any such group?
Re: Caught Shoplifting at Sears
Who does and does not subscribe to those databases is not released... otherwise, companies that do not subscribe would find themselves flooded with applications from thieves.

Thank you, cyjeff, for such a speedy response. Do you have any idea what my civil demand will cost?

it will, most likely, be between two and four hundred dollars...
