Caught Shoplifting in Rhode Island
My question involves criminal law for the state of: RI
About 8 months ago I was caught shoplifting at Macy's. The value of the 2 items were a total of just over $200. I was 18 years old at the time and therefore I was arrested and spent the night in jail for the first and hopefully last time. I was not given the option to post bail that night. I was not given a phone call. The morning after I had court and the conditions decided on were that I was on a year of probation, I have to pay $50 every month and a half until the $512 (double the clothing's value and court fees) is paid off, and if I stay out of trouble for a year it will be expunged. This has become very difficult as I haven't had any luck finding a job. I have only made 2 payments and still have a balance of over $400. Are employers going to continue to deny me employment because of this showing up on my background/criminal check? I have had 3 successful interviews, and then no call back. What businesses do I have the best chance being accepted by, despite of my current record? Any advice would be very helpful.

It's worth it to get the expungement. Borrow money from family if you have to, or get a graveyard shift job. If you're willing to take a job that's sufficiently crummy and low-paid, work's always available and it doesn't take that long to earn $400.
