Scammed By a Girl I Met Online
I met a girl online through Match - she said she would meet up with me if I purchased a report for her that she needed for class. I sent her proof that I bought it and I asked her if I could send her the full paper during our meet up and she agreed. Like the idiot I am, I included the transaction id when I sent the proof. Now the girl is having cold feet to meet up. What would you guys consider this? I buy the paper, now she doesn't want to meet up. I suspect she is reaping profits by selling the paper and I may not be the only one. If this were true, would this be considered theft by deception and is there anything I can do? Thanks in advance.

You didn't follow the instruction to identify your state; but realistically, what do you expect to do? It sounds like you're telling us that you made a gift to somebody you met online and, assuming she's really a she, she nonetheless doesn't want to date you.

Not to mention that most jurors, in light of things like all the Dateline shows, are going to have their own ideas of what "meet up with me" REALLY means - and you're not likely to garner a lot of sympathy considering that the person in question is young enough to be needing papers for class. Whether the situation was one of predatory luring of a minor or not, that's what they jury is going see (even if the person wasn't a minor - when you have to bribe someone to meet with you , that's called "prostitution" in the minds of a lot of folks). Think carefully before you pursue the matter - lest YOU be looking at charges right along side because you have NO way of knowing what HER side of the story to police might be.

You provided a stolen school paper to someone you met online and wonder if she was honest?

I'm in New Jersey. She claimed to be a college student, told me where she was going to school and all. The paper I bought seems to be college material. What if this "girl in need" isn't really a girl at all and if it's some guy making sales off the purchases? I sent proof, I didn't send the full paper and she disappeared. Maybe she got it from someone else? Who knows.

What do you want me to say?

Yes, it is possible for people to misrepresent themselves online.

For instance, I am actually a 18 year old East German girl named Helga. No, not really... or am I?

Again, if someone asks you to perform an illegal or unethical act for them, you can go ahead and assume they are an illegal and unethical person.

Back to your initial question, is there anything you can do. The quote here indicates that you think this person is tricking you into buying a paper that he/she is profiting from. That is possible; impossible for us to know. You don't indicate how much money is involved. I'm guessing not a lot (say $100 or less) in which case you may be best off just to walk away. It could well be a girl who got cold feet.

If it is a larger sum, you might consider filing a report with the local police. It might be a scam that is also hitting others. Expect them to be hard on you and make it embarrassing for you. The likelihood of you recovering money is low. You may still just want to walk away.
