    juvenile daughter caught shoplifting
My daughter, age 16, was caught shoplifting at a local department store--about $120 worth of clothing. We are residents of Texas. She is an exceptional student and active in the community. No previous problems of any kind. (As parents, we are stunned.)

What can we expect? Should we request a court-appointed attorney?

Also, my wife and I are scheduled to be out of the country for three weeks next month, and I am afraid a hearing will be scheduled during that time. Should I call the juvenile court now to speak with them about this potential conflict, or just wait? If the hearing is scheduled during our time out of the country, will the court be willing to work with us?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

I am sure the court will work with you in case there is a time conflict. If you have a lawyer, he could call the court on your behalf. If not, you could do it yourself.

You should schedule a free consultation with a criminal defense lawyer to discuss about your case. You may not need a lawyer at the end. But consulting one is always a good idea.
