Court Summons for Open Alcohol Container
Hi,
I am an international student, 26 years old and got court summons for having an open container of beer in my hand in public place.
The cop who gave me the ticket told me that 'Its a 25 dollar ticket, I dont have to go to court I cant just mail it.'
The ticket says I have to appear on Sep 9 in court.
The problem is I am outside US and cant go to court.
Is there anything I can do online or over phone from outside US?
And will it effect my future Visa interview?
Re: Court Summons for Open Alcohol Container
If the officer is correct that you can plead guilty by mail, then you can do that if you wish instead of appearing in court. As you didn't identify the statute or ordinance, or follow the instruction to identify the state, we can't determine the type of charge or assess it's seriousness in relation to immigration and visa eligibility. If you wish to defend against the ticket, I suggest retaining a lawyer to advise you and having your lawyer seek an adjournment with the court until you can appear and defend yourself (if possible, not knowing when you plan to return). Perhaps you'll be lucky and your lawyer will be able to work out a resolution such as dismissal on payment of costs, and you'll avoid a conviction.
