Caught shoplifting. Will I go to jail?
I was recently caught shoplifting about $80 of merchandise from K-Mart. After Signing some stuff and handing over my ID and SSN I was arrested by the City Police. I posted bond two hours later, my court date is on April 16th.

a clean record, this is my first offense ever. I know that most people get fines and probation but I was wondering if the was any chance of me going to Jail? I will gladly do community service or pay whatever but is there anyway for me to avoid Jail time? would I be better off pleading Guilty or getting a lwayer and fighting it?
I will really appreciate any insight you can give me on wether or not to expect jail time or not.

    Thank You,

Jail time is unlikely unless you fought with the police or the LP or you did something really bad besides shoplifting $80 worth of merchandise.

Most likely it will be a combination of a fine, probation and/or community service.

Even if you plan to plead guilty, you should always hire a lawyer or get a court-appointed one, having a lawyer enables you to plea bargain with the prosecutor for a more favorable sentence.

Moviejim is right, if they were going to put you in jail it would have been when you were caught.
