    Arrested for shoplifting - $600
I was recently caught for stealing over $600 worth of merchandise at neiman marcus. I was arrested and booked - and kept in jail for about 4 hours. I have a court hearing and have no idea what to expect. I have a clean criminal record and am in high standing with my college and community. What is the procedure, what is going to happen?

The store LP's have said that they have suspected that i have previously shoplifted before told me to return everything else i have previously attained. Should i do this? (this is worth about $400 and i believe i have not been caught on camera).

My court date is in a very short amount of time and I do not believe i have enough money to hire a lawyer. what actions should i take to avoid a jailtime/a high fine? Is there an option to serve a lot of time for community service and avoid paying fines?

You need a lawyer pronto. With that ammount your looking at a felony. Don't turn in anything else or admit to anything else. Do what ever it takes to get a lawyer.

i am looking to plead guilty - as the store has video evidence of what happened.

what are the chances of getting a public defender?
what is the chances of getting a probationary sentence/going to a shoplifting program?
what are the chances of getting an ACD for this case in Massachusetts?

What are you being charged with?

You definitely should get a lawyer. If you qualify, you will get a court-appointed public defender but a publc defender doesn't have the time to go through and analyze your case with you like a private lawyer can.

Since you may be facing a felony charge, hire a lawyer. Even if you have to borrrow money. This is a small price to pay for. This is something that will affect the rest of your life.

Depending on which court you go to, yes, it is either free or it will cost you less than $100.

In some courts, you have to show that you can't afford a private lawyer in order to get one appointed by the court. In some, you don't.
