Caught Shoplifting, Penalties
My question involves criminal law for the state of: Nebraska
I was caught stealing a webcam today at my local Walmart, and they have evidence of me stealing 5 cds the day before. I addmitted to the crime and I have a court date set for next month.
I am 19 an I have no criminal record whatsoever. I have no idea what is going to happen. Am I going to jail? If so, for how long? Am I going to be put on probation? If so, how long? This is really freaking me out because I have never gotten in trouble for anything before, and if I get put on probation, I'm going to be kicked out of where I'm currently living.
I had two friends with me but I made sure that they didn't get in any trouble. They got sent home while I had to sit and talk with the police and the store security.
Any help?
Re: Caught Shoplifting, Penalties
I can not tell you what the judge will sentence you to. It could be jail, probation, restitution, fines, community service, or a combination or all of them.
Re: Caught Shoplifting, Penalties
If this is your first offense then expect to pay fines, be on probation, community service. Jail time is extremely rare for first offenders who commit misdemeanors. On any note, please contact an attorney or public defender to help you through this. Make sure when you talk to them, bring up the idea of Diversion. Many attorneys will give free consultations, so contact and speak with as many as you can.
