Live with Parents, Am I Entitled to Notice Before They Kick Me Out
I am 23 years old. I live with my parents (in Virginia), and last night they told me they were kicking me out. While I have no problem with moving out and I will be trying to as soon as possible, do they have the rights to put me out on the streets with no warning or time to find a place to go? I don't pay rent so we don't have a contract or anything written up, I just had heard from a friend that there was something of a 30 day grace/warning period that could be court ordered. I just am really not sure of my rights at this point and cant really afford to just go find a hotel until I find a permanent place to go....Thanks in advance for your help!

in most states, a parent actually has to evict a child if they will not leave willingly. you can research the landlord tenant laws of your states for the specific procedures and timelines of such an action.

A lot of things could create a quid pro quo, landlord-tenant type relationship - doing chores, paying rent, or anything else exchanged for the privilege of living at home. If such a relationship exists, as jk indicates, eviction is the proper remedy.

That said, I have never seen a parent actually take a child to court on an eviction action, and I have never seen a child bring a wrongful detainer suit against a parent. Whatever rights may exist in theory that could be enforced through the courts, they seem to seldom be put into practice.
