Help Changing From J1 to F1 status
    Dear,

I am an exchange student in J1 visa right now and it will be expired next 4 months. Now, I received I-20 form from my College for next academic year. But I dont want to come back to my native country to get new visa. I want to change it within US? Do I have any way?

    J-1 Visa Status
You are referring to the requirement that is usually associated with a J-1 visa, that you must return to your home country for two years upon completion of your studies or program before you are eligible for certain other visas in the U.S. This "two-year residence" requirement ordinarily will apply to you if:
    • * You received any funding (including nominal travel grants) from either a U.S. government agency or your home government; or

      * Trained personnel in your field have been identified by your home government as being in short supply and your field has consequently been included on the U.S. government's "Exchange Visitor's Skills List." (If you do not know whether your country and/or field appears on the "Exchange Visitor's Skills List," ask a U.S. consular officer or check the State Department's website.)
Once you have acquired J-1 status that is subject to the two-year residence requirement, it may be impossible to change to another non-immigrant status or to permanent residence status. Thus, if you believe the restriction applies to you, you should consider discussing your situation in detail with an immigration lawyer.
