Caught With a Marijuana Joint
My question involves criminal law for the state of: PA
I was grabbed by police last night at a concert after someone handed me a joint. The police officer grabbed me and told me to tell him who I got it from. I refused. I was taken into custody. I was given a disorderly conduct with possession of marijuana. I have some paper that I have to mail in to the judge there. I was wondering a few things. Should I get a lawyer? Could I go to jail? My big problem is that I am an Education major and I don't know how this will affect that. This is my first offense.

Yes, you very well could. Possession of under 30 grams is punishable by a $500 fine and up to 30 days in jail.

You'd do well to make sure it's your LAST. In many districts, the Zero Tolerance drug policies extend to potential teachers - possession charges on your background check will torpedo your chances of employment in such districts.
You MAY be eligible for diversion - this is where your attorney will come in handy - to keep this off your record this time. Should you qualify for diversion, keep in mind that any subsequent conviction will result in double penalties and they WILL go on your record.
