Well, it beginning to look like the officer lied when he told me no.

Kinda horrible how such a small thing can completely demolish the life of an 18 year old, with tons of potential. :\

And my crap o meter just pegged full.

You are a legal adult. You knew that doing drugs was illegal. You knew that drinking alcohol was illegal. You made the conscious decision to do both.

Now it is the officer's or the law's fault that your life has a crimp in it.

One of the first signs of maturity is taking responsibility for your own actions. Start here.

What exactly is a crap o meter?

I drank one beer, and made the stupid decision to tag along with a friend, and his drug abusing ways.

However, I was completely unaware of the consequences that possession of cocaine had. If I knew that this charge strips students of their education I would have never stepped foot in my car.

I'm a mature person, I just made a really bad decision. Now I have to struggle for the rest of my life because of a mistake I made a month after I turn 18.

So you thought coke was legal?

Listen, this is going to get you nowhere. Get the best attorney you can find and plan on losing this attitude in court.

Saying that you didn't think the law was important enough to worry about will not gain you friends in court.

I knew cocaine was illegal. But I was unaware possession of such small amounts was a felony. You hear about people getting charged with possession of marijuana everywhere, and how it is a misdemeanor.

Look, I know what I did was wrong.

I was looking for friendly advice, not to be lectured by some tool.

Look, you have parents that can help you with college. I didn't, nor did I receive any Hope tax credit. So nobody is destroying your life over this. This will demolish your life only if you let it. A good lawyer might help you get the charge down to a misdemeanor, which would not impact your parent's Hope Credit (it's not a scholarship, but a tax credit that can save them up to $1800 on their taxes for your first 2 years of college). That would be my goal.

You've come here asking for advice, and people have tried to be helpful to you. Stop wallowing in self-pity over this. Stop trying to lay blame on the cop, or your friend, or anyone else. Suck it up, be a man, deal with it, and let it make you stronger. File it away under "useful information" somewhere in your brain. To the extent that you continue sitting on a pity pot feeling like you're a victim of something that in fact was your doing, you will indeed demolish your own life. Own up to your own mistakes rather than pointing fingers at everyone else. The finger pointing is what a child does.

That's a tough message, and it will probably irritate you further, but it's the best advice you could ever receive at this point. You can listen to it or reject it. It's your life.

Then leave the self pity at the door.

Next time you think about doing an illegal substance, it would behoove you to think it through a bit first.

    Can you be more repetitive?

    Yes.

However, after, what, six different "I didn't know what I was doing and can someone help me after I screwed up my own life" posts, I was a bit tired.

You, apparently, keep hoping that someone will come here and give you the "I should get a do over because I didn't know what I was doing was a felony" defense.

Such a defense does not exist. In fact, most judges will tell you that ignorance of the law is not an affirmative defense.

To continue to hope it will be is a fool's errand.

Like myself, you appear to be destined for a bit of a rough ride until you learn what I was trying to convey to you in my previous post. It took me many years to learn it and you are fortunate enough to have the opportunity to learn it early in your life.

Sometimes, when you're in a jam, it's best to shut up and listen to people older, wiser, more knowledgable, and more experienced. Even when you perceive to have found a "gotcha" in their reasoning or their delivery. If you were so smart, you wouldn't be posting about this experience here on this board. That attitude of yours is what got you where you are, and until that changes nothing will change. But as I said, I've been there and done that.
