Illegally Renting a Room in My House
My question involves real estate located in the State of: New Jersey
    Hi,
I rent a room in my house (a multi family unit), the room has its own entry and bathroom but it also maintains connection to the rest of the house. I didn't make any changes to the house, in fact it is the same as when i bought it. A neighbor complained of an illegal apartment and the city inspectors came over and gave me fine for "illegal occupancy". My question is this: what's the meaning of illegal occupancy? Don’t i have the right to rent a room as long as i comply with the building codes? Does it mean that only family members can live in an apartment and there's a non family member it becomes illegal?

    Thanks...

Why did the city fine you and not your landlord?

The ticket issued to you suggests that your occupancy is at odds with local zoning. I can't tell you the specifics of the citation, as you didn't identify the ordinance.
