"X" in a Ticket Check Box
My question involves a traffic ticket from the state of: California.
Recently received a red light camera notice of violation in the mail. In the box on the ticket that was supposed to show the race of the driver, there was an "x."
Is this a code for some race, i.e. White, Oriental, African American, etc? Does it signify that the reviewer of the video was unable to determine the race of the driver? Does it have any meaning at all?
Thanks in advance for your answer...
Buzzy
Re: "X" in a Ticket Check Box
If it has any meaning whatsoever, it is only for statistical purposes but it has no effect upon the validity of the citation.
Re: "X" in a Ticket Check Box
There are many check boxes on preprinted ticket forms I've seen. For example:
Race
Hair
Eyes
Age
Weight
Height
Married
Sex
If you think about it, all of those questions can be answered with Yes or No. :)
Well, except for the last two. If you answer Yes to "Married", they usually skip the next one. :D

Actually, one can answer "yes" or "no" to the last one as well. :D
Re: "X" in a Ticket Check Box
That's right, but if you answer "yes" to "married", there's no reason to ask about sex. LOL!

Hi, blewis -
The validity it may have is that if it stands for "race unidentifible" and the video is unclear as to the race of the driver, as well as to the sex of the driver, it then can not be proven without a reasonable doubt the the name and address of the registered owner (to which the ticket was sent) is also the name and address of the violator (the unidentifiable driver). In other words, a motion to dismiss can be entered befor the owner ever testifies, or exercises his or her constitional right not to testify.

You're complicating matters too much. This is how it works in California:
The case is called... The registered owner walks up to the podium, hands his/her drivers license to the bailiff who hands it to the judge, the judge will them look at the picture on the citation, as well as the picture on the license, he/she will then glance up to look at the pesron standing before him/her, (the defendant named in the citation... who is assumably the registered owner)...
If the judge thinks the pictures match, then he/she will order the registered owner to pay the fine; if on the other hand he/she thinks the pictures don't match, the citation is dismissed.
The issue of race/color/religion/national creed or sex for that matter cannot and will not come into play!

Ya know, I appreciate all the replies, but none of them answers my original question, which in essence was: does anyone know what an "x" in the race box stands for? I'm looking for a definitive answer, not speculation. It must stand for something, or it would no have been entered into the box. If anyone has a definitive answer, please tell me.

Re: "X" in a Ticket Check Box
X is the race code used in CA for "unknown".
