New York Shoplifting; First Time Offense
My question involves criminal law for the state of: New York

I was first caught shoplifting when I was 15. The cops were called, but they did not press charges (I was not booked). My parents came to pick me up, and we paid $500 in a civil suit from the store.

However, yesterday, I was caught shoplifting from a CVS ($90 worth of items). I was taken to the police holding cell, fingerprinted, and had my picture taken. I was never taken to Central booking, and was released into my parents care. Since I am 17 now, I have a desk appearance in a month. I just had some questions about the desk appearance.

    1. Since I am technically a first time offender (I was a minor in the first incident), what are the chances that this will be expunged from my record?

    2. Should my parents get me a criminal defense lawyer? Or will the court appoint me one?

    3. I have read that chances are, I will probably have to pay a fine and do community service. How much will the fines be?

    4. If this incident is expunged from my record, does this mean that no one besides the court and my family will know?

Thank you very much for any help, and I am in fact, very sorry about this. I really have learned my lesson in the holding cell.

    1. New York doesn't expunge convictions (unless you get a pardon). Talk to a local lawyer about ways you might be able to avoid a conviction.

    2. If they wish; if you qualify.

    3. $500 to $1,500, more or less.

    4. Again, New York doesn't expunge convictions.
