Minor in Possession - How to Plead
My question involves criminal law for the state of: Massachusetts.

    Hi all,

Long story short, I am 20 years old and was caught transporting 6 beers in my bag on my college campus. I was arrested, then made bail shortly after.

My court date is on Wednesday, and I'm nervous about how to plead. I'm guilty, and I'm fully willing to admit that, but I'm scared that this will be on my record forever. This is my first offense, I've never had ANY judiciary action taken out on me for anything.

Personally, I think I should just plead guilty, but a friend of mine who was with me at the time is convinced it will follow us for the rest of our lives. :wallbang:

Thank you so much for your help!!!

Your friend is correct. It's not just going to disappear from your records, no matter what you plead.

Your best bet is to plead Not Guilty, and ask for a Public Defender. (Or if you can afford private counsel, hire private counsel, and do as he tells you to do.)

Contrary to popular belief, pleading guilty in court does not get you a lighter penalty. Rather, it ties the court's hands and eliminates any chance you might have of a dismissal, lesser charge or lighter penalty.
