    Expertise with New Jersey Unemployment
I may have a chance to do a freelance assignment, but don't want to proceed without knowing how my benefits will be affected.

When you claim benefits online in New Jersey, you're asked if you've done any part-time, commission or self-employment work. It seems that freelance or contract work would be considered self-employment, but I've been unable to get any information about that.

    My questions:
-- When you report self-employment work, you're asked how many hours. I've read that in other states there's a limit on how many you can work without it considered interfering with your job search. What's the limit in New Jersey?
-- If you do a job for a flat fee rather than on a per-hour basis, how does that affect the hours you report?
-- When you report self-employment, the online benefits form asks only about hours, not how much you earned. How do you report earnings?
-- When you do self-employment work, do they reduce your benefits the week you report the hours or the week you get paid?
-- If you have no more freelance or contract work the next week, do your normal benefits resume?

    Any help would be appreciated!

The answer is going to depend not just on hours, but also on compensation earned.

Read the information available online. If you still have questions, talk to your case manager for your unemployment case.
