How to name a father on a birth certificate
To Mr Knowitall or anyone else who can help:
I am expecting a baby soon with an ex boyfriend and biological father who I have had little contact with over the last few months. He has verbally and in writing expressed no interest in helping me in any way with the baby nor have I asked him for financial help. However, I would like to claim him as the biological father on the birth certificate for the baby's sake. I currently live in CA and he resides in the England but is an American citizen. He will also probably not be present at the birth but he has not denied paternity.

How do I go about naming him as the father at the time of birth or must the father be physically present to be named? And is this wise since I plan on raising the child myself? Does this vary by state?

I would like to claim full custody and parental rights as he has not expressed any interest.

    Thanks in advance!

He would either need to sign an affidavit of paternity or you would need to file for establishing paternity. If he doesn't show up for court, he can be named the father by default.

If he is decalred the legal father, he has the right to visitation at any point. Just because he doesn't want it now, doesn't mean it will always be that way. He would also be responsible for child support. Even if you do not ask, if the child is ever on any type of state aid, the state can force him to pay.

If either of you change you mind down the road, you can always establish paternity then and work out an agreement.

my babies father is coming down to sign birth certificates?
Ouir first son is four years old he hasn't sign his birth certificate due to that he lives is Puerto Rico and has never gotten on a plane, he is now coming down here to do it. In his certificate when he was born I put his last name. But is name of father is not in the certificate. Now I have a five months old baby and is from the same father he still hasn't met him or sign birth certificates he is soon coming down here all they told is to filled out a paternity paper and change the old certificate and send to jacksonville. That is wasn't a big deal. Thank you
