Name on Social Security Card Not Changed After Adoption
I have a similar problem except the last name on my birth certificate was not changed to the name I have been going by the last 23 years. I was adopted by my step-dad at age 2 and he was changed as my father on my birth certificate, but my last name is still my mother's maiden name on the birth certificate. I have been going by his last name my whole life...I have my driver's license with his last name...gotten jobs with that name and etc...I am now married and have yet to change my last name because I'm not completely positive of proving that my name is my name...I have no idea what to do if someone can help out...Also, I would have posted this as a new thread, but I cannot find the button anywhere and all I can do is read and respond to existing ones.

Re: Unique Problem When Changing to Married Name
Social Security has been in compliance with the REAL ID act and is required to list you true legal name. This is the name that appears on your birth certificate. The only exception is if you legally changed your name in court, in which case you would have a court document to show the change. In other words, your name was never legally changed to what it is now. INitially it may have been changed with SSI before they required proof, but if you want your true, legal name to be other than what is on your birth certificate you ahve to go before a judge and request it. Then you can change it form that name to your married name w/ SSI.

You cannot simply "go by" a name. Your legal name is what is on your birth certificate.

New Social Security Card/Name Change but Last Name Doesn't Match Birth Cert
I was adopted by my mother's husband at age 2. They then replaced my biological father's name with my new legal father on the birth certificate. My mother told me many times my last name was the same as my adoptive father. I always found it odd though that they never changed my name to my new adopted last name on the birth certificate. I recently got married and cannot find my S.S. card anywhere so I need to apply for a name change but am wondering if they will question my currently used last name since it is not the one on my birth certificate, and what can I do about it? Also, when I was younger, I thought I recall my S.S. card having my adoptive last name on it...although, I don't really know for sure since I am stupid and lost the thing...anyways, any advice out there would certainly help. I WANT MY NEW LAST NAME!!

I have a problem regarding the changing of my last name (Adams) to my new married name(Moore). Upon taking the appropriate documentation to the locate branch I was informed that the name on their records was not the name that I have been going by for the last 20 years.

The name on file was my birth name (Barbour) and according to the records after my adoption and legal name change to Adams someone came in to an office a state away from where I live and changed it back to Barbour. Evidence leads me to suspect my birth mother changed it.

Now my issue resolves around the fact that despite proof of my last name (Adams) on my birth certificate the cannot resolve the issue since it was "legally" changed and now I'm unable to to fulfill my change from Adams to Moore because of this.

To make matters worse it's hard to obtain some of my documentation because I was adopted and in NC those records are sealed even though I'm fully aware of all the parties involved.:wallbang:

What is the best way to resolve this in a timely manner because I've been married almost 3 months and need to have my info corrected?

Any help would be a HUGE help!

WHen you say your name was legally changed...what exactly do you mean??? Formally, in court? Or have you simply gone by that name??

Re: New Social Security Card/Name Change but Last Name Doesn't Match Birth Cert
To change you last name to your "new legal father's name" you would have a court document showing the change. Ask mom or dad if they have it. If not, you would have to request the court to now legally change your name to his last name and show this document to Social Security.
