Losing My Job While on Probation
My question involves criminal law for the state of: Wyoming
I live in the state of Washington but was arrested in Wyoming for possesion of a controlled substance. Among other things I was sentenced to one year of unsupervised probation. The shop which I manage is a victim of the recession and will be closing next month. One of the terms of my probation is to "maintain gainful employment". While I have lots of job prospects (including starting up my own business) I may need to collect unemployment for a short time. Would that be violating my probation? Is this something that is checked up on? I just don't want to go to jail!
Also, if I do start up my own catering business, do I need to show a profit to be considered "gainful"?
Re: Losing My Job While on Probation
Talk to your probation officer about this, in advance, and do your best to avoid a lapse of employment. Don't expect your probation officer to be excited with the idea of your not holding down a regular job and starting a "catering business" - the basic idea of having you be employed is to help keep you from having too much idle time.
