Parentage and Support for an Adult Child
My question involves child support in the State of: 19 year old child born in Alabama, now living in Tennessee.

My husband was recently contacted by someone he knew briefly about 20 years ago. She says she is in some trouble and might "have to go away for a while" and that he needs to pay support for their child. There was never an acknowledgement of paternity, but he knew about the baby. He tried to see this child when he heard she was pregnant but she said she didn't want anything to do with him, and she only wanted a baby. So, he left her alone. He sent her a few checks when she was pregnant (his own will--never court ordered or even sought) but she refused them and sent them back. We still have them somewhere. Now she calls him up, says she wants support and back support, but no relationship with the kid. So, then we receive an "Administrative Order for Parentage Tests" from Maximus in Tennessee. The child was born in Alabama, but now they recently moved to Tennessee. My question is this: does he have to submit to this test? Will they be able to go after child support? Back child support? How much back child support? This kid is almost 20 years old. Thanks.

Your husband NEEDS to get a consult with an attorney ASAP.

If he is court ordered to take the test, he should do so, but he really should get that consult before he does.
