Theft from My Car While Impounded
Well my car got impounded for 30 days, during that time my lien company decided that they should repo the car. I found out on the 13th, they repo'd it on the 6th. Becaues of the 30 day hold i could not get it till the 23rd today. And repo yard was 40 miles away.

When I got their I paid theirr $450 storage fee, previous fri payed the $1361 fee for repo etc to my loan company.

Upon getting out to my car.. car was a royal mess. Spare tire was in the backseat, eveyrthing that was in my trunk was in bags in my car. My GPS was not on the dash anymore. Next I checked my trunk all my stereo equipment was gone. Few thousand in amps etc.. also the headunit was partialy torn appart which appears that someone was pulling it trying to get it out.

The orinal impound yard is a police impound, yes privately owned. I let the guy know there within a few days that I was going to get my car out. They would not touch anything in it, since Police gave them form not to. My car was in good shape at that time.

Originaly the repo company said my car had 4 flat tires, was told this by loan company. I called them up that day and asked about that. He said he would go out and check, and said there were no flats. Today he told me their were two flat tires. HIs story keeps changing.. Chino Police dept would not take a police report since they decided he was telling the truth and did not touch anything in my car. So I had to go down to the impound yard in HB, where they had records of my car, and release etc and call police to file a report.

Who is responsible hear?? I figure I can go to small claims and get some money back.

If the vehicle was impounded by the police, there should be an inventory documenting what was in the car. You didn't give us the details of the impound - if this was something that led to the car being searched, that would explain why the contents were in such a state of disarray.

So is the stereo equipment on the police inventory form?

Yes impound yard still has that. My car was impounded for driving on suspended lic. Police did not search my car at all was no reason to. I have had police search my car about 3-4 times so far.. never seen them tear a car up that bad. You can tell the amps were literally torn off the trunk lid where they were mounted. And wifi antenna.. and usb gps were literraly ripped out breaking them.

An inventory search is a search. They either searched your car and took an inventory, or they did not search your car and there's no inventory. "Yes impound yard still has that", is an incomplete thought - what were you trying to say? Have you actually reviewed an inventory completed by the police when they searched the car after impound? Even if not, do you know that an inventory was taken, with the inventory list in the hands of one, the other, or both impound lots? Then, quite obviously, the car was searched.

As for the intensity of the search, you've had your car repeatedly searched, while most people manage to go a lifetime without ever having their cars searched. It may be that the police took the opportunity to take a good and thorough look through everything in the car while they had the legal opportunity to do so. You seem to be guessing or stating your impression of what you think the police would or would not do. I'm not interested in guesses.

If your audio equipment was valuable enough to steal, it was valuable enough to insure, right? So did you insure it? Did you make an insurance claim?

I received paperwork with brief inventory of my car. 4 tires.. 2 in very good shape.. two half worn.. stereo.. So not technicaly searched, but inventory was taken. My neighbor works for other tow yard contracted by police in HB. He say they do that with all cars that come in. So in essence not searched. Tow yard my car was taken same thing was done, and he still has that paperwork. I missplaced it somewhere, never thought I would need it.

Other reason I think repo tow yard. In their inventory they stated i had amps wired to trunk lid. Upon showing Chino hills police they started paperwork. But ater talking to guy at repo yard, he said he thought the capacitor mounted to trunk lid was a Amp. Also he put on his paperwork I had a GPS, which was not in the bags they put my stuff into. Which I told him at the time. Also they stated my car had 4 flat tires to lien holder.. upon calling them week after repo, guy physicaly checked car said there was no flats. And took pictures on that day, when I told him I was going to get it back. But when I picked up my car said it had two flats upon repo. There story changes everytime I talk to them.

I could claim it on my insurance.. pay the $500 deductive.. pay the higher rates for 3 years.. along with my higher DUI rates.. how does this make sense? I doubt I could recover the 2-3k I loss.. in that time based on higher rates.
