Collection Agency Sent Letter About Expired Judgement
My question involves judgment recovery in the State of: GA

I have a judgement for about $90,000 for medical debt from almost 9 years ago. A default judgement was awarded in Sep of 01. In Sept of last year I decided I could rest easy at this point because it was now expired.

Yesterday I got a letter from the collection agency that said:

    ----------------------------------

    Dear Sir/Madam,

judgement was obtained against you on 09-17-01 from the state court of XXXX county in the amount of $ 86588.08 , plus court costs and interest. The total amount due today is $ 164423.84.

The judgement may be placed on the general execution docket creating a lien on real estate or personal property.

To avoid further action being taken to enforce this judgement, contact me by 03-24-09 to arrange payment of this debt.

    Sincerely,

    P King EXT 143

    ----------------------------------

What should I do? The SOL in GA is 7 years for judgements so I dont know if they just thought it was worth the stamp to send letters to a bunch of people or what.

Thanks for any advice you could offer.

If the statute of limitations has run, you can instruct them not to contact you about the expired debt. From what you say, they're probably a junk debt buyer, trying to shake money out of you over a debt they bought for pennies on the dollar.

This thread has a sample letter you can use to try to get the collection agency to stop contacting you.
