Can Landlords Refuse to Rent Based Upon Factors Like Race, Gender and Religion
My friend (black) was looking for an appartment. He called the owner who was renting the unit. When he called the number, he was told that the appartment has been rented. My friend ask asked his friend (white) to call, and the unit was still available for rent. Is this discrimination? Is it legal for landlord to discriminate who enters the premises based on color, gender, and so on?

    Racial Discrimination in Renting Houses
The federal Fair Housing Act prohibits racial discrimination by landlords in most contexts, and state laws would ordinarily apply as well. Your friend may find this site to be helpful.
