    College Student Charged with Shoplifting
My question involves criminal law for the state of: Ca

So heres my story im 18
I took a dress and a tshirt from macys about 3 months ago. i walked out of the store and brought me back in to the back office..
The guy was actually cool. joking around with me sayin that there goin to take me to jail blah blah.. basically just to scare me.
i ended up gettin charged with the 2 items plus another item they said i attempted to steal cause i had taken the tag off..
    i signed there paper.
then a cop came in, checked my background, took me into another room. read me my rights and asked questions.
    he gave me another ticket.
and i guess he had called my house 3 days after. but i had missed the call.
everyone was very nice about the situation and thanked me for being very coropative, and a nice girl
the secruity guy also said i should jus plea guilty cause the edvidence is clear that i did it.

my court date is this thurs. and im being charged with pc 484(a) / 490.5(a) petty theft/retail.

& i had recived the loss prevention bill for 325 about a month ago and im trying to pay it off...
o and i havent recived a note in the mail from the court at all..
    i just have my ticket...

can anyone pleaaasssseeeee give me any advice for thursday and tell me wat to expect?

its my 1st offense and i have a clean record and come from a goodback ground and nice area and such..

its too bad you are a good girl from a good background, because the court will not consider any of it. On thursday, just plead NOT guilty first, and then hire a lawyer. A good lawyer.

really, jail time is not the top of your worries, a criminal record is to be avoided at all cost.

---Wow; I was actually given an option to take a diversion course versus going to court. So, right after the cops gave me a citation; I hauled my sorry self to the diversion office and immediately registered. My first hours of volunteering is tomorrow (this all happened monday).:wallbang:

--I agree with above...I am more worried about my record more than anything..and i am willing to do whatever it takes to keep it maintained.

--I made a mistake..and i should be punished for it..and i am facing every consequence possible.

Good luck and let me know how it goes...

pc 484(a) / 490.5(a) petty theft/retail. (is this one charge or two).If you plead not guilty, they can offer you a plea bargain for ex,to lower the charge to a volation,if it's a misdeamanor. The best thing is too see if you can speak to a legal aid quickly on thursday, then follow there advice.

each paper publishes what they want. I live near one town that prints a "court blotter" with all arrests and some of the courts actions. In another town close by, I can't even find a friends DUI car accident (where he was subsequently arrested). Arrests and courts actions are public record so they can publish them if they want.
