Social Security is Refusing to Correct My Card
Hi there. So I've been fighting with social security for about a year now and finally thought it was over, but apparently not. My mom (let's call her jane doe) married a man (let's call him jon baker). After she married mr baker she got me a social security card. I was only about 3 months old at the time. Mr baker was supposed to adopt me so my last name (doe) matched his last name and my moms new last name (baker), so my mom asked social security if they could put the last name baker on the card instead of doe. They said ok apparently when they were not supposed to, then my mom divorced mr baker and I was never adopted. So my legal last name is doe but my card says baker.

20 years have gone by since I have gotten my SS card and I need it changed. Social security is only giving me a bunch of bullshit about how I need a legal name change document. The problem with that is there is not a legal name change document because there was no legal name change, they just screwed up big time and refuse to help me. I have finally gotten them to actually get a copy of the birth certificate used at the time my mom got me my card. I just got mail today hoping to see them admitting they screwed up and will have my corrected card mailed out soon. No such luck.

I opened the letter and all it states is what documents I need to bring in to get the name changed on the card which is entirely unhelpful and impossible for me to get because they require a legal name change document. What the mail should have had in it instead was the results of their investigation and the copy that they had obtained of my birth certificate that they received.

At this point I feel as if they just don't care at all. If they got the copy of the certificate that was provided to them at the time my card was issued then they would absolutely have to change it, right? I mean the proof is right there, the birth certificate associated with my ss card has a different last name on it and I have provided them with a copy of a birth certificate that I have. The stuff matches, everything adds up. They just refuse to help. What do I do? Is there a way for me to contact the head honcho guy at social security?

Additional evidence that might help would be the marriage and divorce decree issued to your mother and her ex-husband along with your mother's photo ID, showing who she is and your photo ID, and your birth certificate proving you are Jane Doe's child. If SSA verified the BC, they would not have a copy of the document to look at, it is electronic. Also, school records (like a photo ID) showing that you always were Sally Doe in school.

From SSA's standpoint, you are Sally Baker trying to change her name to Sally Doe and all you have to go on is your word that you are both people. That is not enough. Gather as many records as possible and it looks like you'll have to enlist your mother's help in this. Birth records are public records, and in some jurisdictions, anyone can buy your birth certificate, although that is changing too. I am surprised your mother didn't have problems with claiming you as her dependent on her income tax return. Her tax returns might also help establish that you are her child since she claimed you as her dependent.

Rules for name changes have gotten very complex since 9/11 and Homeland Security. You have to establish that you are both people. You can always ask for a supervisor or office manager at your local Social Security office, but they won't change the rules.

Been there done that. I have brought in absolutely everything and have had my mom come with me to help. I called the office today and they said that they do not keep a copy of the birth certificate that was provided as proof. With all the evidence I have shown them there should be no doubt that I am telling the truth. I have three birth certificates and one of them is the original, I have brought in old school ID cards and a year book that show my false name, I have brought in my moms marriage certificate. My moms maiden name that they have on record with my social security card is the name I am trying to get it changed to. Every single thing makes sense. They are just being idiots and won't help. :wallbang:
