Music Parodies

I am looking to change the lyrics to popular songs "Weird Al" style. In my case, the lyrics would be humurous but suitable for all ages. Based on copyright law, it appears I should be protected to use the songs without approval as long as these are considered parodies. Is that correct and how do the courts define a parody? Thank you!

This is great - thanks for the super quick reply. Is the parody version of a song itself protected? In other words, if someone else wanted to copy Weird Al's "I'm Fat" song (a parody of Michael Jackson's "I'm Bad"), would they need Weird Al's permission? Also, can the gereral idea of the style of parody be protected? If I wanted to make a humurous country version of pop songs (with new lyrics), for example, could the concept of making humurous country versions of pop songs be protected?

From what I understand, such is protected, yes. For a more legal opinion though, consult an IP attorney.
