1st Offense Retail Theft in Wisconsin
My question involves criminal law for the state of: Wisconsin

I am a 22 yr old student who was caught shoplifiting at a local grocery store in Milwaukee County. MPD was contacted and they issued me a Milwaukee Municipal Citation, since I do not have a criminal record. I was NOT arrested. The citation was issue at the store. the ticket states the violation as "Retail theft value not $99" (It was under $10 to be exact) . I signed a waiver saying that I will not go to that store again and that I received the citation.

My court date is not mandatory and I have to pay a fine. My question is then, what exactly do I have on my record? If it is just a citation and I pay a fine, then I know I don't have a criminal record.

I was worried because I will be applying to law school in the next year and the officer, who was very kind, told me not to worry, "just pay it and forget it". Is she right? How will this effect me in the future? After I pay the fine does it disappear, will this be something that will show up on background checks?

    Thanks.

Your citation will be on your record as a forfeiture, much the same as a speeding ticket would appear. It is not a criminal offense, but it will not completely disappear. It will be public information and would not require an extensive background check. Look for yourself:

    Dear MuFan,

what has happened with your case since it first happened to you? I'm scared to death also. Did the company you took from sue you or press charges? Please help me. I'm a really good person also and I need help. I'm scared because I have always been good my whole life and if my mom or family find out I'm going to be so embarrassed. Now I know what the quote "I just want to find a whole and crawl it it and stay." I feel like I can't show my face in public or else someone is going to know that I did something bad.

How is school. Can you still go to law school? PLEASE PLEASE let me know. I cannot stress it enough. Thank you!! I'm from wisconsin also.

    Please start a new thread.

Very off topic here: I was at the store today with my mom and I saw an old lady with a store employee at the check out line. There were five toothpastes in the bag already, and the store employee was about to scan the last toothpaste item. However, another lady customer approach the old lady customer and gave her $5 or $7. The store employee got mad and said, "No. You can't do that."
The old lady said, "I'm just borrowing her money."
The employee replied, "No. You can't do that."
The lady customer said, "I got to go."
The man customer behind the old lady asked, "How come?" to the store employee
The store employee replied, "Because it breaks the rules."

The store employee was mad, scanned the toothpaste, and got it off the computer list. Suddenly, the old lady customer throws a $20 bill.
The employee said in a very mean tone, "Oh you have money now?"
My mind was blank. I had no idea what just happened.
The question is what were they talking about?
I'm sorry if this is way off topic, but I just wanted to know what's going on or what this scenario means
