Ex Husband Trying to Get My Credit Report, Fraud
My question involves criminal law for the state of: Colorado

My ex husband has done a multitude of things. Originally changing my address through the post office when I had him move out. He has received my mail including my phone bills and bank statements. He has created an internet account through my cell phone service.

I recently checked my credit report and found out that he kept a credit card that we got jointly together in 2004. He handled all the finances (I know, stupid me) and was supposed to cancel anything that we had jointly when we were divorced. He has ran up a 37,000 bill on it. He kept it in good standing but that much outstanding credit really effected me when I went to go buy a new vehicle. I now found out today that he applied for my credit report and used MY bank card number. I'm going to go change my bank account tomorrow but isn't this fraud, or at least a crime? What can I do to make this stop?

Report the false change of address here. Tampering with/taking someone else's mail is a Federal crime.

In the meantime, get a PO Box and have all of your mail sent there - change your mailing address with all of your creditors and correspondents to the PO Box.

Cancel the internet account if you have not yet done so, and have a freeze put on your cell phone account that requires that they call you and speak to you personally prior to adding new services.

File a police report for the theft of mail, the fraudulent establishment of services, and the fraudulent request for your credit report.

Then get a lawyer and sue his pants off.

When you report fraud on your credit report it will put a freeze on it for 90 days and will require creditors to get more info. This can be placed on your report for longer periodsif needed. Visit www.annualcreditreport.com for your free credit reports and I know experian will list everyone that has requested your report for the last year and links to file reports on unauthorized requests and I believe there is a standard $1000 or $2000 fine for violations.
