    Summoned with a prior engagement
I was summoned over a credit card debt (that I do owe and am willing to pay) but I have a prior commitment on the court date. I was given 10 days notice from the date of the summons and it was on a weekend. Is there a way to file for a continuance without hiring an attorney to do it for me?

What is the nature of the court hearing?

The summons says "to answer the attached petition...". Failure to appear results in a judgement. Also says I may be permitted to file certain pleadings. If I could afford an attorney, I would've just paid the bill originally.

    Getting an Adjournment
Contact the Clerk of the Court to see if you can request an adjournment without filing a motion.
