Shoplifitng from Fry's in Texas
My question involves criminal law for the state of: Texas
This seems to be a trend or something.
A couple of days ago, I did something very stupid. I stole a $300 item from a Fry's Electronics in Texas. I did not set off any alarms, nobody stopped me, and nobody saw me doing it in person (as far as I can tell, at least). Is it still possible that I can still get into trouble from camera footage? Could they track me by my license plate (taken from parking lot cameras)? Anything else? Would camera footage alone be sufficient to get me convicted?
I've been absolutely wracked with anxiety ever since I stole, so, suffice it to say, I won't ever do it again. Please help though, I'm an absolute mess right now.
Re: More Shoplifitng from Fry's in Texas
Oh also. How much time would need to pass without incident before I know I'm actually safe? I think the statute of limitations is 2 years for class B misdemeanors, but surely there's something quicker than that.
Re: More Shoplifitng from Fry's in Texas
Then it would be two years.
While you are probably okay, you realize you got dangerously close to committing a felony, right?
Re: Shoplifitng from Fry's in Texas
I phrased that poorly. I was thinking more about what the maximum amount of time would be for Fry's to review the footage, send it to the police, and then for the police to come get me (or whatever the process actually entails).
"If nothing's happened after 3 months, then nothing's going to happen," that sort of thing.

There is no definitive "if it has been X days, nothing will happen".
Sorry.

ok let me clear this up so you wont get bad advice.....mostly every state has what is called an "in presence" requirement in accordance to misdemeanors especially shoplifting charges. I would assume 300 bucks is a misdemeanor in Texas terms...but if youre not stopped or detained where the cops have seen the merchandise recovered..and it in their presence...most likely...nothing will be done...unless someone you know saw you....getting license plates are used for future references....when you come back into that store....when I used to get license plates....if the cops didnt stop you on the way from the scene..they basically you got away....cause the cops generally tend to want to recover the evidence for prosecution purposes...
now that being said..dont take stupid risks like that again....
in the truth of it all......cops dont have time to look a the footage of stores like they have nothing better. to do...unless the stop was made right then and there......and they have you in custody......if anything.....the exception would be.....if you were part of a theft ring and police investigators were trying to build a case......
Re: Shoplifitng from Fry's in Texas
Would they need to just hand the police a bunch of raw footage? Could they just edit together the relevant bits (if Fry's is even capable of this) and send them that, or would that constitute tampering with evidence or some such?

Tapes or, in today's world, digital footage, will be broken down into relevant sections (days) and then handed over to police with the relevant parts highlighted (look from 12.00.12 to 13:00.00, for instance).
Re: Shoplifitng from Fry's in Texas
thats very right tapes surely can....be turned over to the cops...if for whatever reason it was that serious for them to do it.....but realistically that rarely happens unless violence occurs during the stop....
Re: Shoplifitng from Fry's in Texas
Also, I do live in a different city and county than the store from which I stole, if that makes any difference.
