Will My License Be Suspended
My question involves a speeding ticket from the State of: Illinois.
I'm gonna be 18 on march 10 1991, and I have been have very bad luck with getting caught for speeding.
I got my third speeding ticket today, I have a top of the line radar detector, and the thing didnt even make a peep. The police officer showed me the radar gun, and it said 45 A.
He gave me a speeding ticket for a 45 on a 30, i have had supervision the first time i got a ticket, the second time i got a ticket i just paid a hefty fine, no traffic school or supervision, and now i'm curious as to whats going to happen now when i appear to court. I just finished paying off all my debts and i recieved my license in the mail, minutes after getting pulled over. So i have my license and the ticket (not sure if that makes a difference).
The police officer told me that if i plan on not getting my license suspended that i should get a lawyer.
I'm completely done with speeding, My court date is 6 days before my 18th birthday, so can anyone tell me what my consiquences are going to be?
license suspension? hefty fine? traffic school?
Re: Will My License Be Suspended
You'd do well to take the officer's advice.
In the state of Illinois, fifteen over the speed limit gets you 20 points on your license, and if you're under 21 and have had 2 tickets in 24 months, you lose your license:
Quote:
Will result in suspension or revocation of driver's license and/or privileges when a driver under age 21 commits two or more offenses within any 24-month period. This action is determined by the severity “points” of the violations and the driver's past record.

Fees vary. Call around in your area and talk to a few lawyers. Some even work on sliding scales.
Can't make any guesses as to your odds. If the judge is in a great mood, you might either get to keep your license or have a short suspension. If he's a stickler for details, well...

One thing im confused about is, why is it so much better to get a lawyer? what will a lawyer do for me in court?
Re: Will My License Be Suspended
An attorney will use his knowledge of the law (and its little foibles) to argue DISPASSIONATELY on your behalf.
I mean no offense, but Average Joes are largely idiots in the courtroom, go in for histrionics, and generally make complete fools of themselves in front of the judge.
It ain't Law & Order in there. If you care about what happens to you, you leave the arguing to the people who went to school and learned how to do it, then sat for the Bar and proved they knew what they were about. A couple of days of internet research is not at all comparable to years of knowledge and experience.

I really appreciate the quick responses.
I've been looking around and lawyers are ranging around $200, is that a reasonable price?
And also as i mentioned before, i have my license with me right now, does that help anything out?
