    First Offense Shoplifting in Missouri
My question involves criminal law for the state of: Missouri

I was at a Kmart in Missouri and tried to steal a couple things that came to about $32. I was also going to steal some others, but left them. I opened the items that I left and they came to about $33.

I am being charged with Destruction of Property and Larceny. Are public defenders available in St. Louis County? What should I do?

I know that it was stupid and it was a spur of the moment thing. But I am freaking out.

Public defenders are available in every court in the US for those who qualify. Plead Not Guilty at your arraignment and request a public defender be appointed. If you qualify, one will be appointed to your case.

Is there anything else I should do or know? Can I get a public defender before my court date?

You will get a public defender if you plead Not guilty at your arraignment, but not before, and only if you qualify. The courts will determine if you qualify based on your financial situation.
